I hope I don't get shanked over this forum posting

Fri Sep 25, 2009, 2:04 PM
I saw a forum posting that I had to respond to. It was about the pricing of artwork and such. I know that many artists are going to feel negatively about what I am saying here, but it seems more and more that people sometimes forget what the other individual could be going through and what is really going on for them. We never stop and consider why that person might not be able to pay $300 bucks per page or whatever. It might not be that they don't value your time or your art. It could be a lot simpler that they like you are trying to get their creations out there and might be having to do it on a very shoestring budget to achieve their dreams. You want people to love your artwork and maybe they want to get their name out there just as much:

This forum makes me honestly sick to my stomach. I am sick of hearing artists whine about people hiring them to do artwork. If you believe your artwork is worth 300 bucks then keep at that price, but you will find more and more people are less likely to want to work with you at all. Stick firm to your prices and don't haggle with people. Maybe you will earn more respect that way from people hiring you.

Also legitimately there are people that are unable to pay 300 bucks that want to do projects. I am a great example. I am in the process of trying to publish several comic book series that I am going in the hole over. I am using my leftover resources from Financial Aide money and my SSI income. This doesn't leave me a lot of money for say MYSELF TO EAT. Because of this I am ultimately looking for an artist that is going to provide me with a lower per page figure then someone that wants to charge say 100 bucks per page. If there were not people out there that are just strarting out and were willing to do it for a lower page rate I would never get my book out because of my limited resources. Not everyone is trying to take artists for a ride. I personally as a creator want to work with someone that is more concerned about getting their name out there and could lead to more jobs because they worked on this particular series for me. If you are only worried about the money then I wouldn't want to hire you anways.

I know everyone has to eat and live their lives. I value artwork as well. I know that a lot of time and energy goes into this because I have been trying to slowly teach myself to become a better artist, but you have to realize that not every creator is trying to take advantage of lower prices. Some of of us legitimately can not pay those prices, so we have to go with the lower individual. Sometimes we don't get the exact quality we would like, but it is all we can afford. I mean I am a student full-time and my only income is Financial Aide and SSI. Think of that the next time you actually start to work with someone. You don't know their life. Now if it is say Marvel or DC comics then heck yeah charge them whatever you want, but if they are an individual realize they just might have a love of art and trying to support the arts on whatever limited income they have. We are all humans trying to survive in this world. Start acting like it. Yes I am aware this will probably not be well received from all the artists but it is a different opinion then what everyone else seems to be posting. So see the world from someone elses eyes before you want to chastise them.

Hi! How are the comics coming? How is life? I hope you're making the progress you've been wanting to make.

Things are moving along. The artist is working dilingently on the character sketches. She has half of them done at this point. She has until the end of the month via our contract so things are pretty on track. How are things on your end?

Life is hectic but that is to be expected when you are starting up a comic book and still going to school :-)

Good to hear! I love when there's productivity. It makes everyone feel alive and excited!

Life is going along well. It's the end of week 4 of Fall semester. I'm taking a class for soundscapes: podcasts, digital sound, etc. Two classes for usability and interface design. And PHP and mySQL.

It keeps me busy sometimes but often I just have some reading and short homework sheets to fill out.

I agree when there is productivity it does make people feel alive and excited. I have been trying hard to get things set up, some things have had to be changed drastically along the way and others have emerged from the depths of nowhere. It is exciting. :-)

Sounds like you are in some rather interesting classes this semester. How far along are you in school? I am only in my second semester. I am taking English 112 (Expostion and Composition), Creative Writing, Basic Algebra, and College and Life Skills. It has been an interesting semester if not all together way too easy. I am waiting for the hard to hit and then I look at the classes I have to take next semester and realize that is when the hard stuff will hit me and I moan aloud. School can be fun and challenging and it can be a pain all at the same time. I have to keep reminding myself, as I am sure you do at times, that the end result is going to get me into a field I love. I have decided to explore Social Work full-time. Go me right? lol After that I intend to take art classes and some more writing courses and other fun classes I just want for my own knowledge.

Second semester only for me to! And I'm using 50% loans 50% parents lol.

Social work: go for it! Giving to the community is its own reward.

For the fun classes, I keep hoping I can do that to. I want to go back and take creative writing and more PE classes after I have my B.A.

Do you find that after midterms or that big semester break that the heavy load comes crashing down? That happened last time. I'm wary it will be the pattern.
